Possibly One or Two Known?
A very rare blue Duffy Crescent Saloon 204 Jefferson Street Louisville, KY with embossed crescent moon sold on Ebay May 7th for $1,200, a Buy it Now transaction and possibly a fraction of its true value.
Apparently a seller did her homework and checked the value and found it to be worth around $1,500. She’d been selling some of her mother’s items including some clothes and other items. She listed it on Ebay for $1,200, probably thinking she’d sell it quickly and make a few quick bucks. What the seller didn’t know was that the $1,500 value was for an amber example which sold years earlier.
The Duffy pig, a whiskey bottle, is found in shades of amber and occasionally aqua. The highest price we could find sold at auction in a colorless shade, sold for $2,352 and we are aware of an aqua example selling privately for $2,800. But to our knowledge, this is possibly one of only two known.
So what would the only blue Duffy Whiskey be worth in today’s spirited bottle collecting world? Well, I’ve talked to a few collectors who’ve pointed out that an extremely rare blue Fish Bitters sold for $100,000. There are a few of those known in different variants. Not to mention a Homestead Bitters in blue sold for a purportedly $200,000 along with a blue Sazerac Bitters selling in the six figure category, why wouldn’t this rare ham sell for at least $50,000? Granted these are bitters but for a whiskey collector there’s no limit on what it could do. A blue W.Wolf’s barrel whiskey recently sold for around $26,000, with just a few being known.
This just goes to show you that there are deals out there if you look for them. Ebay lists so many items that a sharp collector can find bargains if they keep their computers on and eyes peeled. This isn’t the first time an item has sold for a mere bag of shells only to be resold for much, much more. One thing for sure, the blue Duffy pig will go down as one of the better buys ever. To a bottle collector, obtaining something in a one known color, especially blue, is a dream come true. Even if it is, well, a pig.
