For Every Season…
Once in a while I like to share some new pieces we picked up. I guess the “we” is more me but we’ll say “we” so it doesn’t sound like I’m bragging which is exactly what I’m doing. Of course we’re all guilty of wanting to show everyone “our latest finds,” and I’m no different. Anyway, the Hyatt’s Infallible was found in Sacramento years ago and surfaced late last year. I love the word infallible, it’s a rhetorical word which means pretty much nothing. Like, trust me, nothing will happen, I’m infallible. The Lediard’s Celebrated Stomach Bitters was purchased from a guy who called me and said he had the bottle and I said send it out and he did. They are a popular bottle, especially the pontiled versions. They are quite old and often have a great color and lots of crudity. They are also found quite often in the west. The Townsend’s Sarsaparilla was found back east and it has an unusual spool type top. When I look at the Dr. Townsend Sarsaparilla Albany, NY, I am amazed at the colors produced at some of the early Eastern glasshouses . I’m told the top is unique to a small number of Townsend bottles. How many I have no idea, but I know I sure haven’t seen many. Pictured also is the Washington Spring bottle with the President (Tucker S-61) the aqua Whitlock barrel and the green pocket flask were purchased from Glass Works Auctions recently. I don’t collect mineral waters but I’ve always lusted after one with a picture of our first President. The Whitlock barrel kind of fits in with the two others I have, it’s not nearly as nice a bottle but I like aqua bottles, too. It’s quite old with an open pontil and the price was right. Lastly, the amazing double layer lutz maglite is the only example I’ve ever seen. I’m sure most of you are saying the same thing followed by, so what? You have to be a little off kilter to collect marbles I admit. I show two pictures, one without backlight and the other shows (kinda) another layer of lutz beneath the surface. You can see why they call it a maglite, the color when lit from behind is a beautiful amethyst If anyone has seen another? I’d love to hear about it. Well that’s my sharing for the day. Feel free to share your recent acquisitions. Don’t be shy. We will be happy to post them on our home page and gallery.

- Hyatt’s Infallible Life Balsam NY. Is anything really infallible?
- Nice pontil on this early bottle. Notice how the base kicks up.
- Lediard’s Celebrated Stomach Bitters
- Nice pontil on this pretty bottle.
- The Dr. Townsend in an emerald green
- The Dr. Townsend, lots of whittle in a gorgeous color. Of course most of them are a gorgeous color. Why not just collect these?
- Dr. Towsend Sarsaparilla Albany, NY
- The base at first appears smooth, a closer looks more of a sticky ball type pontil. Definitely old enough.
- What a neat top. It looks like a wooden spool of thread without the thread.
- Not a bad likeness of George Washington. I’ve seen a lot worse.
- Washington Spring Co. Ballston Spa NY with “C” on reverse
- The Three Amigos starring the recently acquired B. M&E.A. Whitlock & Co. New York
- A Simple but very pretty green pocket flask.
- To be honest I made the “double layered banded lutz maglite,” name up. In marbles it more about attributes than the name.
- Double layered banded lutz maglite. I know, crazy but hey, whatever floats your boat.
Barbara and I love to see the new goodies that you have picked up ! It is always a pleasure to view your latest finds, many thanks for sharing , kind regards, Dale and Barbara Santos.
Thanks-you two lovebirds.
Jeff
That marble is friggin nuts! Anyone who appreciates the art of blown antique glass; be it bottles or what-ever would truly enjoy this.
Thanks guys-
I hear you, glass is glass and although I urge collectors to buy older marbles and bottles, there is some really beautiful art glass out there. Artist are making marbles now and some are amazing. Glass is glass, old or new it can be breath taking. Especially the stuff coming up in our next auction.
Jeff
What is the amber barrel on the left………..
Thanks.
Paul.
Paul-
That is a Nelson’s Old Bourbon from Maysville, KY. Another fairly recent acquisition.
Jeff
Nothing prettier than old glass. What I would really like to see is a good picture of the iron pontill Dr Owens London horse liniment Clarkston Mich bottle. It has not been for sale by itself or a picture of it any where that I know of in 40 years
Donald-
Maybe someone out there can chime in on that one. It’s not something I’ve heard of.
Jeff
Nice Acquisitions Jeff. Im jealous. I especially like the Townsend with the spool lip finish. I never seen that before.
Glenn Scott
Thanks Glenn-
I should do this more often. Now all I need is a vast fortune and we’ll have a weekly column!
Jeff
Hi, I was interested in knowing if you have any information on a Dr Pope’s Sarsaparilla bottle in our possession. It almost looks identical to the “Dr Townsends” bottle EXCEPT for the spool top. We are unable to find anything out about it. One of our “local” bottle buffs indicated it was extremely old and quite valuable. Any information would be appreciated.
Pam-
The Pope’s Sarsaparilla is no slouch. It also has a pontil is are fairly hard to find. I know they come in aqua, if your’s is green we’d better talk. The last two sold in the $1,000 range. It’s possible Pope was from New Orleans. I say that because of another bottle with the Pope name from there. I’m sure there’s someone out there who knows more than I.
Best Regards,
Jeff
The Bottles are delicious…but of course I love to see New Marbles~
Great Acquisition….and “Brag On” you deserve it~
You are so observant mudpuddles49. Bottles are obviously our main focus but marbles are probably our passion. Of course it’s not like we don’t get passionate about bottles. You get my drift. The beauty of glass.
Thanks,
Jeff
Very nice Jeff !!!
This Townsends unusual lip, while not unique, is extremely rare. Jeff Noordsy had sold a stunning emerald green example “so-lipped” some years back, but it had a large lip chip. In the last 6 months someone posted another Townsends on Facebook, also with that “Spool” lip.
Jeff,
Very nice stuff.I have seen one other Townsends like that years ago.Albany is only 40 miles from here and I have seen my share of the bottles. I don’t know anything about marbles but they got my eye, truly great pieces of glass. Thanks for all you do for the hobby.
Jim Bender
Thanks Jim. We enjoy what we do.

Wow, killer examples Jeff! Those barrels are off the charts!
Thats a killer Townsends Jeff! I Really Dig it!
I started collecting bottles in 1971 with a gift from my great aunt in Napa CA. A Gyser Springs soda water bottle. I started purchasing bottles at flea markets in Napa and Sanoma counties around that time with my great aunt and uncle (who were looking for collictibles) and found myself looking for soda water bottles. I was born in 1963 and would go to Napa in the summers if my grades were good from Orange County. I recently read a book that my son checked out from the liabrary on the element Cobalt and it got me thinking of my collection that has been boxed up and unseen for fourty years. I found your site today and have been rebitten by the bug, so to speek. I will check back to your website and auctions. My other interests are beer cans, cars, coins, guitars and amps. Also beer and food of course. It is nice to see the beautiful images on you site.
